Data driven medicine is a reality, and in oral healthcare data-centered approaches are becoming more relevant. This lecture will present the concept of precision dentistry, lay out its foundation, and provide some examples from precision caries management in 2023.
Since the Human Genome Project began, enormous strides have been accomplished in understanding the genetic architecture of human traits: both normal range traits and disorders. In recent years, multi-omics and phenomics approaches made possible by the Human Genome Project have been instrumental in long-range goals to develop personalized/precision health care. In this talk I will summarize ways in which genomics and phenomics are being applied to oral health, particularly dental caries, and how these approaches help lay the groundwork for future precision health initiatives.
This presentation will provide an overview of current research that seeks to characterize the person-level heterogeneity of dental caries, using large-scale clinical data, as well as information from human genomics and biofilm multi-omics analyses. The presentation will include examples from recent and ongoing investigations among pediatric and adult populations.
