AAC Pillars – Pillar I : Interprofessional

It is important to understand the definition of ‘inter-professional collaboration in healthcare’ in order to engage the appropriate stakeholders. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation described the goal of this collaboration as being a way to “improve coordination, communication and ultimately the quality and safety of patient care”. This is a vital in oral health care as in all other areas of care.

We anticipate and welcome collaboration with physicians, nurses, social workers, pharmacists, community health workers, researchers, members of the dental trade alliance as well as dentists, dental hygienists and dental assistants.

Going forward, we plan to facilitate education about the caries disease process in training programs of all types, lobby for accreditation standards that include inter-professional education and communication among health professionals for the benefit of improved patient health.
